Culebra – Puerto Rico

We sailed from Christmas Cove (USVI) to Culebra the day before yesterday. It was a great sail, well most of the way, I got a little green, more about that here. But wow what a great anchorage, it was so flat if felt like we were at the dock. The reef at the entrance blocks the swell.

There’s a great little grocery store that you can dingy up to and the prices were about in line with St. Thomas, the bread was fresh and the milk was old.

The next day we did some laundry in the morning and rented a golf cart in the arvo. It was $45 / day - they don’t do hourly plans, we took it for 3 hours not sure what you do for 24 hours I guess go to all the beaches. Next time we’d probably hire a jeep instead. We weren’t allowed to go on any dirt roads (even though we did) and it wouldn’t make it up some of the steep hills. In my opinion that’s where all the fun is. Dirt roads and the mountains. We found Culebra to be very hot and dry, we even got to see a wild bush fire on the side of the road. There’s a lot of fancy houses and some more “local” dwellings but all in all it was very clean and the locals are super friendly which was a breath of fresh air compared to the BVI. The prices were also very welcoming. Bottled beer at the bar was $2 and icecream (more like sorbet) was $2 as well. Not too sure on the grocery store prices, nothing was marked but we came away 3 bags of goodies for $30. Culebra was great but I’d hate to be there for summer, it was burning hot there and it’s winter. We spent about 24 hours there and now off to Puerto Rico.
