October 24th marks the start of the countdown to the World Ski Championships in Schladming, Styria. To commemorate this auspicious occasion, the Austrian Mint will release a new coin.

FSI World Ski Championship 2013

For the second time, Schladming will host the FSI World Ski Championships. The last time the contest was held there was in 1982. 24th October is 100 days before the commencement of the competition.

Some 450+ competitors from 70 countries, will participate in 11 disciplines. It’s expected that around half a million spectators will be there to watch these supreme extreme sports men and women take to the slopes. Their triumphs and sorrows will be reported to the rest of the world by some 3,000 journalists, using new technologies and good old -fashioned TV and newsprint.

Commemorative Coin

The Austrian Mint is releasing a commemorative coin to celebrate the occasion. This will be available on 24th October as  copper and silver 5 euro pieces. Numbers are limited. Not surprisingly the coins will feature a skier, snow and all the hallmarks of the competition. It will also bear the names of the 9 provinces of Austria.

Book Early

With so many extra visitors expected to the area for the event, it makes sense to book your beds early to avoid disappointment. But if all the hassle and hype of the ski celebration causes you concern, there are plenty of other places and pistes where you can go to enjoy the snow. Steiermark has around 83 ski areas – so plenty of space for everyone!

Chalet Lowonahill is an all-season holiday home in Styria. It’s the ideal place for you to discover the delights of all 9 provinces of Austria. To find out more, simply click here.
