"What's this play about," asks my husband as we descend into the subway and head towards Times Square.
"9/11," I respond. He looked less than thrilled as I elaborate, "but I don't think it's sad. It says its uplifting!"
I'm a bit confused myself, so I pull up the email that offered us press tickets to see what I'm missing:
Come From Away is the true story of when a small town in Newfoundland hosted an international community of 6,579 strangers for five days after the September 11th attacks forced the airspace to shut down.
I had no idea that was a thing, but suddenly Phil and I are sitting front row in the Gerald Schoenfeld theater hypnotized by the seemingly untold story of how our American tragedy affected global citizens around the world. It's a story of human decency. As Gander's population doubled overnight, the community rallied together to offer food, clothing, shelter and more.
Come From Away will make you laugh, cry, and appreciate our Northern neighbors. It's a feel-good play with an exceptional cast and an amazing band. The characters are incredibly relatable despite the diversity of their backgrounds, and I guess that's kind of the point. No matter where we come from, even if we Come From Away, it's important to band together, love thy neighbor, and always help those in need.
