A record 91 restaurants have opened in the Twin Cities so far in 2014 and more are in the pipeline. What is perhaps most impressive about this boom is that the vast majority are independenttly owned and operated... and many of these are neighborhood made-from-scratch kitchens with locally-sourced food supplies.
Although not new this year, one of these neighborhood cafes is the Colossal... Small. Local. Divey. Creative. Approachable.
Colossal Cafe started as a teeny-tiny cafe on 42nd Street by Cedar Avenue in the Minneapolis. It won many accolades, but there isn't room for many people. Then they opened a slightly larger St. Paul location on Como Avenue in the St. Anthony Park neighborhood.
Still not big, but still cozy and with room for more people to enjoy their creative, delicious breakfast and lunch menu. Open 7am - 3 pm, I hear their homemade chicken pot pie is fantastic to take home and bake for dinner!
Both are charming neighborhoods, but St. Anthony Park holds a special place in my heart for its ecelectic mix of architecture and its erudite vibe. Nestled in the hills on winding streets between Luther Seminary and the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota, it is an ideal neighborhood for a socially-minded academic.
