The City of Camdenton is accepting applications for the position of Code and Fire Official I.  Must be age 21 with a valid Missouri Operators License, minimum of 2 years preferred in fire inspection experience with State certification as Fire Inspector I or be able to obtain within 1 year; computer literate; and strong oral and written communications skills.  ICC Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector and Zoning Inspector certifications within one year. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

DEFINITION: Under the supervision of the City Administrator, the Code and Fire Official will perform annual inspections of commercial occupancies and new construction, as directed, per the International Code Council (ICC), International Fire Code (IFC), and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and with the City/Mid County Fire Protection inspection agreement. Will inspect properties for compliance with Camdenton City Ordinances (nuisances, etc.,) within the City of Camdenton. In addition the specific tasks include:

  1. Multi-disciplinary position with staff and task requirements in the City’s Administration Department.
  2. High interface with the public and must have the ability to balance enforcement issues while maintaining a positive interface between the City and the Public.
  3. Must be able to process complaints for non-compliance of all zoning, commercial nuisance, and related regulations including making fire code compliance inspections, where a determination has been made that there is a violation of State or local law exists.
  4. Responsible for inspecting activities and violations of City Ordinances and communicating in verbal and written form with complainants and violators to bring issues and violations into compliance with City’s ordinances.  To accomplish this task this individual will:
  5. Document, report, and inspect in written, verbal, and graphic form all reports aspects of compliance cases;
  6. Maintain thorough and accurate records of all complaints, case files and interactions with the public for current and future reference and legal action.
  7. Compose in both hard copy and digital form and through typical word processing software  accurate letters, memos, monthly reports detailing inspections, reviews, investigations, time spent, and other written communication on routine matters;
  8. In conjunction with the City/Mid County Fire Protection inspection agreement and as needed with the Mid-County Fire Protection District, Fire Marshal and Camdenton Building Official ensure compliance with City ordinances and codes, maintain inspection and City records, perform all business license life/safety inspections and annual fire and other assigned inspections of fire/commercial occupancies and enforce ICC, IFC, NEC, NFPA and Camdenton City Ordinances relating to fire and life safety.
  9. Ability to perform duties of the Building Official in his or her absence and inspect all residential and commercial construction within the city limits.
  10. Perform all business license fire/safety inspections and annual inspections of commercial occupations.
  11. Must patrol City for violations of Ordinances as described herein.
  12. Must have ability to read assessor (land ownership) maps, identify relevant properties and verify ownership addresses for compliance mailings.
  13. Must be able to operate and maintain necessary equipment including the following: City vehicle, cameras, tape measures, communication radio, and related essential job equipment and supplies.
  14. Must perform other tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: In order to hold the Code and Fire Official position an employee must:

  1. must be 21 years of age
  2. must be citizen of the United States of America
  3. must have a valid Missouri Operators license must pass a complete background check including post offer pre-employment job specific testing and drug screening with no felony convictions, or other than honorable discharges from any military service
  4. Graduation from High School (preference an AAS / Associate Applied Science) or equivalent or any combination of education, training and experience that would qualify for the position as determined and approved by the City Administrator
  5. Preference of at least 2 years of fire inspection experience and have State certifications as Fire Inspector I or be able obtain within one (1) year;
  6. experience in zoning code compliance is a positive but is not required;
  7. be able to obtain certification as a “Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector” and “Zoning Inspector” as certified by the International Code Council within one year of hire;
  8. knowledge of building and fire inspection procedures
  9. demonstrate the ability to take direction as needed
  10. shall have a working knowledge of MS Office (including word and excel)
  11. be able to work under standard operating procedures and abide by policies stated in or granted by the municipal code
  12. be able to understand and execute verbal and written instructions
  13. have good oral and written communication skills / read, write and speak the English language
  14. shall be comfortable working in a stressful environment, an unpredictable schedule in all weather conditions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  While performing the duties of this job the employee will:

  1. frequently required to sit and talk or hear
  2. specific vision ability required to include close vision and the ability to adjust focus
  3. ability to operate a keyboard and view computer screens for an extended period of time
  4. sight, hearing, speech, frequent lateral mobility
  5. lifting items above head
  6. climbing ladders or steps
  7. stooping and bending
  8. squatting, sorting, kneeling and reaching to ground level and overhead as required for such tasks as retrieving files
  9. be able to hold and grip objects
  10. mentally analyze a situation
  11. solve problems
  12. make decisions and work under pressure in area of responsibility
  13. may work a varied schedule including some evenings, weekends and occasional unpredictable ending times
  14. may be subject to emergency call back on off duty hours
  15. subject to monthly random drug and alcohol testing
  16. may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, dust and/or pollen
  17. frequently works near moving parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibrations
  18. occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and the risk of electrical shock

The Code and Fire Official I is appointed, employed and compensated at the discretion of the Mayor and Board of Alderman
