Choosing a Nepali Boy’s Name

After the fantastic response to my article on Nepali girls names (which you can read all about here) I had some requests to write about Nepali boys names. In my opinion, I find Nepali boys names harder to settle on and I feel that there are not as many Western sounding names unlike the girls.

Some of you lovely readers have given the names of Nimai, Ash, Ashok, Mohan, Rudra, Rajendra, Milan and Raj. Some unusual and some common – but all beautiful boys’ name from Nepal and also a cross over with India.

As with my post on girls names, I tried to find names that were common/similar to Western sounding names. There were really not many at all, although these are a few I could summon: Hans, Rabin, Arun, Hari, Hemish, Neel, Dev and Tapas (included because it sounds like food – yum!).

Similarly, these are some boy’s names which are easy for people in Western countries to pronounce: Sanjay, Hira, Kailash, Bibek, Deepak, Rahul, Bijay, Netra, Prabin, Ramesh, Ankit, Nishan, Karan and Nilesh.

Unfortunately, every parent is thinking the same thing. If you are looking for a unique name or one that is more traditional then this list is for you (although it might take a little time to work on some pronunciations): Suraj, Ishoor, Maghraj, Tej, Mahendra, Himal, Bishwambhar and Deenabandu (can also be shortened to Deen/Dean!).

Readers – Do you have any other suggestions of Nepali boy’s names? I would love to hear of other boys’ names as well. What was your main determiner when choosing a name – how it sounded or what it meant?
