Track Day Chip Tuning

When most people talk about technology these days they are generally referring to smartphones, tablets and new innovations like Google Glass. But we all know technology is pretty much in everything we use these days, not least the car.

Every car made today contains electronic control unit (ECU) and that gives rise to opportunities to improve the performance of a car in terms of power, economy and emissions. The practice of “chip tuning”, as it is known, refers either to swapping out the chip in the ECU or tuning the existing chip by updating the software.

The latter is controversial and seen by some car enthusiasts as not genuine chip tuning. Either way, though, the aim is to improve the car’s performance.

Most car manufacturers tune the chip to produce as low emissions as possible but this impacts on speed and power performance so many racers and car enthusiasts prefer to swap out the chip in the ECU for one tuned with speed and power in mind and, in some cases, fuel efficiency.

As a result, several companies have cropped up, such as RaceCHIP,  offering specifically tuned chips pre-programmed to supply one or more of these performance enhancements.

RaceCHIP has three Chiptuning modules available for do-it-yourself installation, each one offering something slightly different in performance. Their standard chip offers a 25% increase in performance, their Pro2 chip a 30% increase and their top of the range Ultimate a 31% increase.

Their chips can be installed in cars made by 56 manufacturers, from Alfa Romeos to Volvos. This allows almost anyone who owns a car to improve its performance relatively simply – a working knowledge of car mechanics and electronics is all that is required!

So the next time you’re discussing technology, why not throw into the mix a little automotive tech as well as your opinion on the latest smartphone!
