Chia Seeds: What They Are and How to Eat Them

If I had known years ago, that the same seeds that grew those funky looking Chia Pets were actually HEALTHY. I would have bought one!  Chia seeds are actually very good for you and come packed with vitamins and minerals.

What are Chia Seeds?

The chia seed is literally a seed that comes from a plant called salvia hispanica which grows primarily in Central and South America. The name “chia” means “oily in Nahuatl. The Nahua people are native to modern-day Central Mexico they are believed to be the descendants of the Mayans, that is why chia seeds are often called “the Mayan superfood”.

Why are chia seeds good for you?

  • Weight Loss Aid – when the seeds get wet, they absorb moisture and expand to 3 times their size. When the outer sheel of the seed disintergrates, it turns into a gel (yes, the same gel you used to smear on the chia pet). That gel, when injested, makes you feel fuller and can curb cravings.
  • Lower Cholesterol – They are full of soluble fiber which is essential for lowering cholesterol.
  • Better Sleep – Chia Seeds have twice the amount of triptophan as turkey, and when injested on an empty stomach, can aid in falling and staying asleep.
  • Good source of Protein – 1 tbsp of chia seeds has 3 grams of protein. So two tablespoons a day could replace protein in a meal. The seeds are a complete protein, meaning they have everything you need to grow strong hair, glowing skin and healthy nails
  • High in Antioxidants –  These little guys are loaded with antioxidants  which fight free-radicals which can lead to cancer and other diseases
  • Great source of Omega-3s – Chia seeds have more Omega-3 fatty acids than salmon – Seriously.
  • Good source of calcium – If you are vegan or have a dairy intolerance, then you should incorporate chia seeds into your diet. They are high in calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. All excellent for maintaining bone health and density

How do you eat chia seeds?

When added to liquid, chia seeds expand and their outer shell become soft and chewy. Left long enough, and the shell disintegrates and forms a gel. (Similiar to flax seed). For this reason, chia seeds are often used in shakes, smoothies, soups and nutrition bars because they thicken whatever recipe they are added too. It is also the reasons why they are great for weight loss, because they make you feel full faster. These are the kind of chia seeds I use along with a couple of recipes.

  • Quick Refreshing Chia Fresca Drink
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 2 cups coconut water (or filtered water)
  • 1 tbsps lemon juice
  • 1 tsp of sweetener of your choice (I used stevia but you can use whatever you want)

Stir a few times and drink up! If you want a thicker drink, let it sit for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally and then drink.

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of natural fruit juice
  • 3 tablespoons of chia seeds

Refrigerate over night until it becomes thick, then mix a spoonful of gel with water after a workout for a quick, refreshing boost that’s full of protein, electrolytes, Vitamin C and everything you need to help your body recover.
