Blake Mills is no ordinary singer songwriter. He has been busy since his 2010 debut, Break Mirrors, as a guitarist, session musician and producer for artists including Fiona Apple, Alabama Shakes and Sky Ferreira. Take a listen to his latest single, “If I’m Unworthy”, and you’ll see why his talents in songwriting are as promising as his six string strumming. Mills puts his own spin on the simple love song with a heavy focus on, of course, guitar. This song is carried by Mills’ inventive use of tremolo on guitar and his naturally raspy voice preaching an inviting melody. Nothing is more powerful than the bridge that sees Mills’ purposeful guitar solo battle against a sweeping wave of production only to suddenly revert to the bare essentials of the tune. “If I’m Unworthy” is the opener for Mills’ sophomore effort, Heigh Ho, out September 16th on Record Collection/Verve Records.
