Changing Hats, Changing Attitudes
As our November hat series draws to a close, David writes…

Changing Hats, Changing Attitudes
The image is an 1818 woodcut. The caption is 1927. Point of the two dates being that you can see an evolution – some progress, shall we say – in "attitudes" (the loaded word). To wit: if the image is anything to go by Jews 200 years ago were definitely seen as aliens, outsiders. They were stereotyped. They were seen, in many instances, as either risible or slightly sinister. "Not our kind", so to speak.
By 1927 – if the caption's anything to go by – the outer layers of that nasty, unpleasant stuff were beginning to fade. The tone's not warm or admiring or neighbourly, but it's at least civil.
A London Walk costs £9 – £7 concession. To join a London Walk, simply meet your guide at the designated tube station at the appointed time. Details of all London Walks can be found at www.walks.com.
