CD Review: Rodney Cromwell – Black Dog

This is the latest single from Rodney Cromwell's latest album Age of anxiety. In addition to the original version of the single, the EP features remixes of two tracks off the album and an extended version of the single.

Remix EPs can often be a rather hit and miss affair. At their worst they either barely sound different from the original, or sounding like overly indulgent nonsense. Thankfully this EP is very much in the hit category! The two remixes here see the tracks take on a new life in dramatic fashion to provide something new and exciting!

The single, 'Black dog', sounds like a dance remix of the Cure's late 80s work. There is an interesting mix of upbeat and lively tunes and a dark, melancholic background.

The remix of 'You will struggle' sees a complete transformation of the album track, taking on a more chilled out, early hours clubbing vibe to it. At the same time the vocals having a more electronic and subdued feel. The remix of 'Barry was an arms dealer' sees the song turned on its head. Starting out with a cold industrial atmosphere the song gradually chills out to take on a laid back vibe, paired with robotic vocals. The EP closes with the extended version of Black Dog. Much like a "12 inch" mix, it sees the song stretch itself out comfortably to allow the feelings to be completely felt and the vibes to be fully realised without the song outstaying its welcome!

This is a great single that not only offers something extra for those that already own the album, but also provides something new and amazing!
