Carvers & Co – Carving Delicious Artisan Food in Singapore

By Dariel

Some time ago, we were invited to a new restaurant situated along East Coast Road. This restaurant is called Carvers and Co. It was founded by a very founder who sailed from the faraway lands onto this soil to carve the name Carvers and Co deep into one of the pillars along East Coast Road – nah, I’m joking. Okay seriously, this cosy bistro is run by chef and sometimes fitness trainer Sarah Lin. The restaurant can accommodate up to 40 diners in a welcoming space that encourages groups of friends and family to connect over hearty meals and comfort food.

Comfort Food? Here We Go!

To start, there is a daily brunch menu with a range of interesting options such as a “Truffled Egg-in-the-Hole Toast with Bacon Jam”, and “Peanut Butter & Banana French Toast”. Both tastes really good. Among the two, we prefer the Peanut Butter & Banana French Toast. It’s got this roasted nutty flavour, together with the moist of the banana and the honey-soaked toast – every bite is hmm-hmm! But hey, the other fared well too, with the warm egg yolk oozing out as you cut up the toast.

This leads into their menu of hearty roast meats that can be enjoyed individually or ordered whole and shared. With a weekly rotation of featured roasts* including “Wagyu Beef served with Caramelized Onions and Garlic Confit”, “Thyme. Sage and Rosemary Turkey with Creamy Mash and Candied Carrots”, and “Porketta and Apple Chutney with Summer Panzanella Salad”, Carvers & Co. aims to earn a place on every meat lover’s must-visit list. Just look at the juicy Wagyu beef! Hey, writing lies but pictures don’t! Take a bite-sized piece of beef, poke the garlic and spread the caramelized onions at the tip and whoa! The turkey meat is moist and flavourful and it goes well with its sides and the pork tastes just great by itself and with the apple chutney sauce. Oh don’t forget about the super-crispy roasted pork skin! Crackling good.

*Their roasts can be ordered as a whole, half or individual portion. It would be wise to book a roast in advance for the meal to ensure that it does not run out.

And not forgetting their dessert – the Warm Blueberry and Banana Crumble served with Vanilla Ice Cream. The dessert is not too sour on banana fillings and too sweet on the crumbles. Even though we were presented with so many dishes, this dessert did not end us up being too filled up. Probably it’s the warmness of the dessert at work?

The Chef, Owner and Carvers and Co.

The inspiration for much of Carvers & Co.’s cuisine came from an extended sabbatical in Southern Italy where Sarah discovered numerous country cooking techniques and traditions on a farm stay, preparing meals alongside ‘Italian Mamas’ with stories and secrets to spare. She also worked with Chef Damian D’Silva at the inception of his popular Immigrants gastrobar and has since spent time refining and developing her own style cooking for friends through “supper clubs” and other events.

“I saw a chance to create a place where friends could go for a great, really down-to-earth meal made from simple, quality ingredients. I love the idea of seeing people passing plates back and forth, enjoying themselves and the conversation and that’s what I hope Carvers & Co. will come to be known for,” said Sarah Lin, owner, Carvers & Co.

Coffee Principles.

Because coffee is an integral part of any good meal, the coffees served at Carvers & Co. are brewed with beans roasted by Common Man Coffee Roasters, perfectly complementing their brunch and roast menus. Carvers & Co will also be offering pour-overs featuring single origin coffee beans from reputable roasters from all over the world. Their Head Barista from Melbourne, Ling, also conducts coffee cupping sessions every now and then and if you happened to be attracted by the aroma in their session when you passed by, you are always welcomed to walk in and join them. Ling knows his coffees very well and are able to explain to you the differences (flavour, aftertastes…) in them. He will be delighted to answer your coffee questions if you have any during your visit there.

Cold Refreshing Handcrafted Beers.

They also do have handcrafted beers to go along with the roasts you may be ordering or simply just for a drink or two with a couple of friends. I find the Palm beer crisp, refreshing and…it just goes so well with the hot weather and food. I don’t know how to explain this but yeah, this is how it is. They also serve Eet & Bierlokaal de Molen beers from The Netherlands that is well-liked by many.
