Capture The Color Contest 2013 – #CTC13

By Kenin Bassart @Constantramble

Whether you’re a full time traveler or just a long weekender, your best  travel souvenirs are usually your photographs. While you could tell me you cherish that “I heart Las Vegas” shot glass you bought, I bet you spend a lot more time enjoying the photos you took than you do taking shots (If you are currently a  frat-boy or under the age of 23 that last statement doesn’t apply to you). The other great thing about travel photographs is that you get to share them with the world, while that shot glass collects dust in some curio cabinet somewhere. That’s why we were stoked to get invited to Travel Supermarket’s CAPTURE THE COLOUR CONTEST 2013!!! ( I used bold so you can tell it’s a big deal :-) ) Thanks to our friends over at Travel Addicts, Jdomb’s Travels, and Tripologist, we were invited to share 5 of our favorite photos inspired  by a specific color. So without further ado (or rambling on my part) here are our entries for the 2013 Capture the Color Contest.

 Yellow

Being full time road trippers and absolute car lovers there was no way we couldn’t slip at least one car picture into this contest. Heck, I could easily just pick out 5 different cars but that seems like it would violate the whole spirit of a “travel” contest if I did that. I digress.. back to the car. This is a Citroen 2CV featured in the classic 007 caper For Your Eyes Only which takes you through the lovely french countryside! If you haven’t seen it, you need to leave this blog. Wait I didn’t mean that, stay on this blog, but seriously go watch the movie. It features one of the coolest car chase scenes around.

Red

Ahhhh red, the sweet color of love. For some reason, us Americans got it all wrong and decided that white should be the wedding color of choice. I mean I get that white symbolizes virtue, holiness, and purity and all, but red is all about passion and shouldn’t all marriages have passion? In India, they got it right and decided that red should be the central color for weddings, I think it’s absolutely the right choice, don’t you?

Green

We visited Banff in the fall of 2012 while on our trip to Alaska. It took one hike in Banff to fall in love with the whole area. Why? This frickin’ spot right here! I can’t think of a more quintessential depiction of what a hike through the mountains should look like.

White

Alaska is by far our favorite state in the union. The fact that it’s a vast unspoiled land has a lot to do with it. On top  of that the people there are all pretty awesome (and crazy…. but it’s that fun kind of crazy not the stabby kind) and Lauren absolutely fell in love with the place.  We came across these footsteps while taking a road trip along the Dalton Highway.  Imagine stopping on a desolate ice road, wandering out about 50 feet from the edge of the road, and finding these footprints. There’s no civilization around for at least 100 miles, no other cars, campsites, or any other reason for anyone to be out there. Yet here they are, some strangers footprints in the snow. Even in the vast frozen tundra, as humans, we seem to never truly be alone.

Blue

The ocean has always played an important part in both my and Lauren’s life.  There ‘s something about it’s hugeness that can overwhelm the mind and calm the soul. On top of that the ocean houses some of natures most amazing and majestic creatures. Because of its incredible size and depth, some scientists theorize that we may never know just how many exotic species it houses. This example, from the Georgia Aquarium, is one of my favorite creatures. The whale shark is a gargantuan gentle giant. Even though it’s so massive, it feeds on plankton, the oceans smallest snack. You’ve gotta love the irony of that.

Well that’s it, we’ve captured 5 colors.  I know, you love our photos so much you’re screaming “WHY ISN”T IT 10 COLOURS INSTEAD OF FIVE?!?!!?” at the top of your lungs and throwing a “3-year old girl that just dropped her popsicle on her favorite unicorn” tantrum. While I can’t share more photos with you. I can point you to these other brilliant photographers behind some of my favorite blogs that I’ve suckered in to nominated for the capture the color contest.
