Building Your Family

By Melissa Boles @_mboles

Have you watched Big Love?

How about Grey’s Anatomy or American Horror Story: Coven?

I ask because these shows are some of my favorite examples of building a family.

Some people have really great family.  Some people have good family.  And some people do not have family that is anywhere near good.  They might still be good and kind people, but maybe they aren’t exactly what you need from family.  Or maybe they treat you poorly.  Or maybe they are just far away.

Regardless of what your family is like, it can be pretty important to build your own family.  These people surround you no matter what; they love you no matter what.  They will let you talk about anything, and will help you through whatever you are going through.  And sometimes, they are people you trust more than your own family.

And that’s okay.

It’s hard.  It can be sad and frustrating, but it’s okay.  You need to be surrounded by the family that you truly need, and sometimes that isn’t your blood family.

I’m not saying you should become a polygamist, or that you’ll only find your family among your fellow interns or witches, but if you don’t know what it means to build your own family, you can see beautiful examples in these shows.  People who love each other so much they will go to extreme lengths for one another, and who know that those people will always be there for them.

I could name dozens of TV shows or movies or books that show you families that have no blood relation (or minimal blood relation).

Instead I will tell you that if you are struggling with family, there are people waiting for you to join their family.  They might come around soon, or in a little while, but you are never without family. If you’re unsure where to start or what your family might look like, start here.  My family is big and beautiful and spread across the country.  We would happily have you.
