BUCN Perfect : The Big Screen at Consol

By Kipper @pghsportsforum
The Penguins started the tradition of having the big screen outside the arena in 2008 when the Igloo was still around. Since then it’s become a sensation with fans. There’s no grills, glass, or alcoholic beverages allowed, but the feeling outside is that of a tailgate party. It was so popular at Mellon Arena that the new Consol Energy Center decided to continue the tradition.

The Freakshow on 96.1 KISSFM in the mornings is a huge influence on the city. Mikey and Bob are ever present outside the arena. Their influence can be seen at any local sports game from high school to college to pro. Duquesne had gigantic heads of them made and they had them in the crowd at games. They have the ability to get the whole city pumped up for games. In support of Tomas Vokoun, they started the hash tag on Twitter #twerkingforTomas and #VokounaMatata. Both were nationally trending during more than one game this playoff season. Find them on Twitter at @fsmikey and @fsbigbob.

This morning Mikey and Bob announced that not only would the screen be up for Friday’s game, but it will be increasing in size almost threefold. A better sound system will also be in place. I think this speaks volumes about the atmosphere and increasing crowd size for games. There are so many people watching, that it would be stupid not to make these changes.

If you’re in Pittsburgh and you can’t afford tickets to a game, can’t find tickets to a game, or want to be amongst Penguins fans, the big screen is the perfect solution. The environment is actually pretty kid friendly and doesn’t get out of hand. There are food trucks and plenty of entertainment for everyone. The atmosphere outside is sometimes even better than the atmosphere inside. Bring some lawn chairs, maybe a blanket, snacks, drinks, and your best cheering voice and head down for Friday’s game. Rally towels are provided to all fans. I've been there for quite a few games and its so much fun.

My prediction: It’s going to be the largest crowd yet this playoff season. The Pens are up 3-1 over the Senators after last night’s crushing victory. The Sens coach and their captain, Alfredsson, have basically given up on their team. I’m predicting a huge Penguins victory on home ice. Bring it home boys!!
