Legendary Comedian Joan Rivers has passed away at the age of 81 according to her daughter, Melissa Rivers.

“My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh,” Melissa Rivers said in a statement. “Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”

Rivers suffered a cardiac arrest last week while undergoing a vocal cord procedure at a clinic in New York City.  Although Rivers’ spent several days on life-support following the surgery before her death was announced this afternoon.

Rivers rose to a household name in 1965 after a guest appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.   She made a career out of poking fun at celebrities, including herself, and often joked about her extensive plastic surgery.  The night before the surgery that would lead to her death Rivers joked about dieing during a standup act at a comedy club in New York.

“It’s hard getting old,” the fearless comedienne told the crowd at the Laurie Beechman Theater on August 27. “I’m getting so old. I am now 81 years old, I could die at any second! Pufft, like that.” – from Radar Online

Rest in Peace Joan Rivers, another bright light has been extinguished.  Our sincerest condolences to the entire Rivers family.

Here is a memorable moment from her career as she visited Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show in March, 2014
