Box Office Predictions: Three New Releases Can’t Beat ‘Apes’

Posted on the 17 July 2014 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

1) Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes- 33M Weekend, 143M Total

Even with a harsh 55% drop, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is a sure-fire winner this weekend. I don’t think any of the new trio can open to more than 30M. 30M would be a breakthrough for any of the new trio.

2) The Purge: Anarchy- 25M Weekend, 25M Total

A quick sequel. A solid marketing plan, and it is (surprisingly) the best reviewed of the three new releases. Still, the first only opened to 34M (which was BIG for it), onto a 64M total. It made more than half of its total gross in the first three days. Those are TERRIBLE legs. The Purge: Anarchy won’t do what the first did, but might attract more fans who are hoping this is more violent than the first, and really takes advantage of the premise.

3) Planes 2- 22M Weekend, 22M Weekend

The last Planes had decent legs, opening to 22M, growing to a 90M final gross. I’m predicting about the same trajectory, with possibly worse legs. Family films have been underperforming this summer, so I think the trend will affect Planes and it won’t be able to outperform the original either.

4) Sex Tape- 17M Weekend, 17M Weekend

Sex Tape is getting the worst reviews of the three new releases. With how many R rated comedies we’ve had so far this summer, we’re due for a misfire. I think this Cameron Diaz/Jason Segal flick is due to be that misfire. Although, fans might turn up for what is rumored to be Diaz’s first nude scene ever. It worked for Aniston is We’re The Millers, but that was a better movie.

5) Transformers 4- 9M Weekend, 227M Total

It likely won’t drop too hard, as none of the new releases are targeting the films audience.

6) Tammy- 8M Weekend, 72M Total

7) 22 Jump Street- 4.5M Weekend, 181M Total

8) How To Train Your Dragon 2- 4M Weekend

9) Earth To Echo- 3.5M Weekend, 32M Total

10) Maleficent- 3M Weekend, 229M Total
