Box Office Predictions: Three New Films Can’t Stop The ‘Beast’

We are in a very crowded box office right now. We already have four films that are performing well, with Beauty and the Beast, Kong Skull Island, Logan, and Get Out. Now we’re looking at adding Life, Power Rangers, and CHIPS? Crowded, indeed.

Beauty and the Beast opened so large that I don’t think it can actually avoid a drop of 55%, even with an A cinemascore. Yes, this is the kind of film people will repeat view, however big openers typically fall hard on week two. Will it be enough to send Beauty and the Beast over 300M in 10 Days? It has direct competition now from Power Rangers, which is looking to pull in some family audiences. And while it isn’t great, 44% for a Power Rangers movie is actually OK. No one expected the critics to love this, and the fact that it has gotten positive notes from a handful of critics is actually helpful.

So where does that leave our other two new releases? Life looks like an Alien clone, and stars Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal. It likely has the best shot to do well, and it has a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. CHIPS, on the other hand, stars Dax Shepard and Michael Pena, and did not screen for critics. Not a good sign. I’m going to guess CHIPS doesn’t do as well this weekend. And it can be mentioned that Slamma Jamma opens in about 1000 screens this weekend, and it might be enough to overtake The Belko Experiment for 10th place.

Next week, we have the poorly reviewed The Boss Baby (38%) against the yet-to-be-screened Ghost In The Shell. The reluctance of the studio to screen Ghost In The Shell worries me.
