Bongeunsa Temple

By Teymarie @teymarie

Bongeunsa (봉은사) is one of the many ancient temples scattered throughout Seoul, bringing an incredible juxtaposition between traditional and modern living that can be seen clashing all throughout Korea today.

The fact that the COEX Mall, the largest underground shopping center in Asia, resides right next door is nominal. This temple has endured all sorts of environments during its 1,200 year span including the Japanese Occupation and Korean War.

The buddhist temple, which was constructed in 794 at the behest of a prominent monk during King Wonseongs’ reign during the Silla Dynasty, is open year round and free of charge.

It also offers a two-day, one-night temple-stay program where those interested can learn and partake in the experience of monastic life.
