INTERVIEWWelcome!!  Thanks for stopping by and for taking time for this Q&A!!  What is your favorite ice cream flavor?Firstly – thanks for having me on your site today!

Chocolate. No debate. Ask me any question around ‘favorite flavor’ and the answer’s always ‘chocolate’. I say please feed me reviews because they’re better than chocolate – so now you know how much I love reading your reviews!Which mythological creature are you most like?If I say vampire – do I get staked? You make up your own mind: I love goth/punk clothes, Lost Boys is one of my favorite movies (come on, that soundtrack!), I’m often found up at night (insomnia, how do I hate thee, let me count the ways…), I’m pale and burn in the sun (that’s my Irish heritage) and I hide from direct sunlight (migraines – enough said).  But like Light in Blood Shackles I blood abstain, so you don’t need to worry about your neck…I love vampires. I love fantasy. Rebel Vampires is my new fantasy series. Write what you love to read. Then you get to write, read and be passionate about it. Rebel Vampires is set in the supernatural world of Blood Life, in a hidden London where vampires are both predator and prey. I may love vampires. But I wanted to write a vampire book for adults. Where they weren’t simply the hunters but also the hunted. And death drives desire.Vampires, rebels and romance. Don’t leave out the romance.First book you remember making an indelible impression on you.The Far Away Tree by Enid Blyton. Amazing fantasy for kids. Every time they came to this tree it was different. And a different land would be at the top. Now that’s escapism. The concept that your imagination could conjure anything. And that anything was possible. I’ve been running with that idea ever since. To write something, which recreates such wonder. Gripping. Compelling. It was dark too. The lands had as much chance of being bad, as good. The characters were highly changeable and could turn on the main characters. That sense of danger and thrill is fundamental to what I write now. I guess – cheers Enid Blyton. How do you develop your plot and characters?Over time. I catch them in my ideas book. Actually ideas books – plural. I have one idea. Which will spiral off. Then I have a different one – maybe a setting. Then I have a eureka moment – and the two will snap together. That’s the chief concept. Then comes the plotting. I outline. I know the end of a novel, before I’ve even written the first line. It’s like being in a chauffeur of a Limousine full of VIPs (the readers) – I don’t set off on a journey without first checking the car’s not going to breakdown and I know the route! Writing’s a craft. I’m the one in charge of your experience – so I’d better be in charge.

Blood Dragons – the first book in the Rebel Vampires series – was developed from the idea of a vampire with a photographic memory called Light. Light’s extraordinary memory is based on my son’s. My son is an autistic savant – meaning he has a photographic memory. I wondered whether being a vampire with such a gift would be a blessing or a curse.

EXCERPT
‘London’s not yours.’
I stiffened. ‘The Lost have walked these streets as long as you humans,’ I whispered, low and intense, ‘which makes them ours, as much as yours.’
I might as well have clouted you. You drew back, with a shiver. ‘You hunt here – parasitically. But England? The world? It belongs to us. You’re just…’
‘Parasites?’ I offered. You didn’t even have the decency to look away.
‘These are my streets,’ you tapped the sticky table for emphasis, in a boozer, street, postcode you’d never have ventured into, if it hadn’t been for me.
I took a drag of my e-cig. ‘Over hundred and fifty years says different, sweetheart.’
You wore that narked expression, which I’d hoped we’d left behind for the night. ‘My home. Not yours.’
‘Any reason it can’t be both?’
‘On account of you’re…’ You stopped yourself, pushing your Guinness away with a jerky shove. Your shoulders slumped. You finished softly, ‘…not human.’
‘Right. Because I’d missed that.’ I took a mouthful of nuts, munching thoughtfully. You’d withdrawn hermit-crab like, your hair falling in two curtains over your mug. ‘There were humans once, who thought like you, the last time a Blood Lifer had the courage to reveal himself to a First Lifer. It was one of my ancestors. A man of reason, in an age of superstition. He reckoned our two species could live out in the open - side by side - so I was told. These First Lifers? They thought he was the devil.’ You’d raised your nut. I could see your peepers - dark gray now - through the veil of your hair.
‘What..?’
‘They burnt him.’
