Next 18 months after burn injury is fateful phase for Django Reinhardt’s life and music career. He aware that his fourth and fifth fingers of his left hand has been weaken by burn injury, so he decided to used them mostly for barring. He only has two fingers to play cords, so he created his own unique chord fingering system only with his index and middle fingers. To compromise his disability, he learned how to move his fingers very quickly. His achievement in new chord fingering system and will to keep playing music provokes admiration by other musician until today. He also abandoned banjo-guitar and decided to playing guitar instead.
On 1934 Django Reinhardt met French violinist Stephane Grappelli, then formend the Quintette du Hot Club de France. This band has unique composition, consist of three guitarists (Django Reinhardt, Joseph Reinhardt, and Roger Chaput), one violin section (Stephane Grappelli), one bass section (Louis Vola) and Freddy Taylor as vocalist on some of their recording tracks. As a band with some Gypsy descendents as their member, their jazz music was heavily influenced by traditional Gypsy music. Jazz was invented by Afro-American and deeply influenced by African music on its early years, making it difficult to get penetrated by other music genre. But the Quintette’s adventure beyond standard jazz to Gypsy sound gave a new definition on jazz.
Django Reinhardt’s wild improvisation on jazz astounded their audience, and soon the Quintette gained respect by other musicians. It is said that every jazz musician seeking true recognition must play in America, but they already get recognition here on Europe. On 1934 they recorded some tracks in studio, supported by some additional players on horn and piano section. Django also did some jam session with American jazz musicians such as Rex Stewart, Benny Carter, and Louis Armstrong.
