Big Trouble In Little China

Starring: Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, James Hong, Victor Wong, Kate Burton
Directed By: John Carpenter

I’m a few years late to the party, but I finally got around to seeing Big Trouble In Little China. It’s so totally 80’s. It’s got street gangs in 80’s clothes, karate (weren’t we OBSESSED with karate in the 80’s?), magic, monsters, and Kurt Russell. It’s incredibly cheesy for an 80’s film. Kurt Russell is a truck driver that helps his friend retrieve his mail order bride who was abducted because she had green eyes.

There’s fighting, sorcery, and general sillyness. It’s hard to take this film seriously, but that’s not really the point, is it? It’s a mildly fun 80’s romp. If you haven’t seen it, you’re not missing a lot, but it’s worth a look if you really enjoy 80’s camp. And it’s directed by John Carpenter. Who is more 80’s than John Carpenter? No one.

And for what its worth, the special effects are actually really good for a film from 1986. They actually hold up pretty well.

FINAL GRADE: B
