Best Places to Visit Over the Holidays

Posted on the 20 December 2012 by Frontiergap

As you’re more than likely aware, it’s almost Christmas and some people like to spend it anywhere but at home. From the traditional to the unusual there are plenty of options for those who want a bit of festive spirit. Here is a collection of some of the best places to visit at Christmas time.

Bethlehem, West Bank

To the more religious among you this one is an obvious choice. Making a trip to Jesus’ birthplace gives you the opportunity to get away from the tinsel and commercialism and head back to the origins of Christmas. If you want a midnight mass to attend on Christmas Eve then head to St. Catherine’s Church.

Midnight Mass, The Vatican, Italy

Another traditional option, and a memorable place to attend a midnight mass, is the Vatican. Nativity scenes and chestnut vendors are in abundance throughout the area. St. Peter’s Square, Piazza Navona and the church of Santa Maria are the most visited places throughout the Christmas season.

Santa Claus Village, Finland

If the original meaning of Christmas just doesn’t do it for you, why not visit Santa instead. He can be found in his hometown in Finland’s Arctic Circle. A ‘white Christmas’ is guaranteed here as are the reindeer. And if all that’s not excitement enough there’s an amusement park nearby called ‘Santa Park’.

Bondi Beach, Australia

If you want something as far away from the conventional images of Christmas as you can get then head to Bondi Beach. Forget snow; think sun, sea and sand. Hundreds of backpackers and locals gather together on the beach to listen to bands and DJs rock the Pavilion.

Dublin, Ireland

Back to the cold; Dublin provides much opportunity for a bit of festive cheer. There's the 12 Days of Christmas Market at the Docklands and ice skating. Or why not head to sing carols at St. Patrick’s Cathedral or take the children to the elves’ workshop. There are also an impressive 100,000 bulbs lighting up the streets.

Nuremberg, Germany

The world-famous Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg has all the Christmas presents and festive spirit you could need. Toys, candles, confectionery and trinkets are all around. But don’t forget to sample the great food and drink such as Bratwurst and Glühwein (mulled wine).

If this has given you the itch to travel, take a look at all of the opportunities Frontier has to offer.
