Best Home Remedies to Get Rid of Swollen Lips Fast

A pout-worthy lip is good to have. But if your lips are swollen too much due to some reasons, then it will not look good on you. It becomes easily noticeable by everyone. Many may ask you what happened and it can be really annoying. So, before it goes from bad to worse, you should try remedies given below to get rid of swollen lips.

Swollen Lips Treatment

You need not go after chemical laden products in the market to treat swollen lips. They may cause side effects and can be harsh on your lips. So, you should try using natural ingredients to treat swollen lips.

Swollen Lips Causes:

There are many reasons for the occurrence of swollen lips. They are s follows:

  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Viral infection
  • Dehydration
  • Dryness
  • Allergic reaction to certain foods
  • Injury or cut
  • Insect bite
  • Low quality lip care products
  • Extreme climatic conditions

Swollen Lips Treatment and Remedies:

Aloe vera:

Take a small amount of aloe vera gel from its leaf and gently massage your swollen lips with it. You can leave it on your lips as long as you please. Apply this twice a day. It is an excellent remedy for mosquito bites, insect bites or any allergic reactions.

Baking soda:

Take one tablespoon of baking soda and mix it with water to get a paste. Apply a thick coat of it on the swollen area and wait for 10 minutes. Then you can wash it off with water. Apply this after every 3 to 4 hours till the swelling is gone. You can treat swollen lips caused due to fever, insect bites, allergic reactions and mosquito bites with this paste.

Coconut oil:

Take a few drops of organic coconut oil and apply it on your swollen lips. Leave it on your lips for about two hours. You can repeat if the swelling does not reduce.

Organic coconut oil is great for treating skin issues. It has antimicrobial properties, which help in getting rid of bacteria, fungi or virus. It also absorbs the impurities from the pores of the skin. It can keep your skin supple and nourished.

Epsom salt:

You need 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt, 1 cup of warm water and washcloth. Mix the Epsom salt in water and then dip the washcloth in warm water. Place it on your swollen lips. Wait for 15 minutes. You can repeat it a few times till the swelling is gone.

Warm Epsom salt can sooth your skin and provide you relief from the pain. Epsom salt is also good for healing cuts and bruises on your lips. The anti-inflammatory property of Epsom salt is effective for reducing swelling.

Honey:

You need one tablespoon of honey and cotton ball for this. Dip the cotton ball into honey and apply it directly on the swollen area. Let it remain on your lips for 20 minutes and then you can wash it off with cold water. Repeat this process two to three times a day.

The antibacterial properties of honey help in reducing the swelling in the lips. It helps in soothing the itching and irritation that you experience and reduce swelling.

Ice cubes:

You need 1 or 2 ice cubes and a soft washcloth for this. What you have to do is to wrap the ice cubes in the washcloth and press it over the swollen area gently for 8 to 10 minutes. Repeat it after a few hours till the swelling reduces.

Turmeric powder:

Take one tablespoon of fuller’s earth and mix it with a pinch of turmeric powder and cold water. Mix them well and apply the paste on your swollen lips. Let it dry and then wash it off with lukewarm water. Repeat this twice a day.

Try Apple cider vinegar treatment:

Mix 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with one teaspoon of water. Dip a cotton ball in it and apply it on your lips. Let it remain on your lips for about two minutes and then you can rinse with water. Use it twice a day.

Apple cider vinegar is an effective antiseptic and it can reduce the swelling caused due to edema and inflammation.

Tea tree oil and aloe vera:

Take one teaspoon of aloe vera gel and mix it well with a few drops of tea tree oil. Apply this mixture on your lips and massage your lips gently for a minute or two. Wait for 10 to 12 minutes and then wash with cool water. You can repeat it once or twice a day.

Although you can use aloe vera alone for treating swollen lips, adding tea tree oil to it increases it benefits. Tea tree oil has antimicrobial properties and this is very effective for reducing the swelling due to infections and insect bites.

Witch hazel extract and salt:

You need 1 tablespoon of witch hazel extract, ½ teaspoon of salt and cotton ball. Mix both the ingredients well and apply it on your lips with a cotton ball. Leave it for 30 minutes and then rinse with cool water. Repeat once or twice and soon you will get the result.

The astringent properties of witch hazel help in cleansing and disinfecting the surface of the skin. It reduces the inflammation and reduces the swelling.

Warm water:

Soak the washcloth in warm water and then squeeze it to remove the excess water. Place this cloth for 8 to 10 minutes on your lips. Repeat after an hour.

In addition to these home remedies, it is also important that you eat a balanced diet that is rich in vitamins. This helps in avoiding swollen lips. But if your lips swell regularly, then it is better that you consult a doctor.
