This can be found very easily. So a medicinal healing system, Ayurveda uses these herbs and natural supplements and their therapeutic properties to treat ailments. One of the natural supplement, is shilajit.

In Ayurveda shilajit is known as a great natural king medicine. Shilajit is not classified under plant category. It relates with minerals that sludge from the Himalaya rocks. It is a mixture of organic plants and humus that had been compressed by layers of rocks mixed with various microbial metabolites.

The Charaka Samhita states that, "Stones of metal like gold etc., in the mountains get heated up by the sun and the exudates that comes out of them in the form of smooth and clean gum is called siläjatu".

Shilajit is a Sanskrit word which means rock-invincible or destroyer of weakness. In Ayurveda it is known as a rejuvenator and adaptogenic.

How shilajit came in origin?

It is not a story of today but of many years back, approximately 50 million years ago. Many years back, Indian continent collided with Asia and this formed a mountain range, Himalayas. As these formed, many of tropical forests were crushed and compressed between these boulders. With time, these forests enriched with minerals and other nutrients and by mixing with humus, shilajit is formed. Now in every summer, as mountains get warm, it oozes out from rocks.

What kind of phytochemicals are present in the shilajit?

  • Shilajit consists of phospholipids, alpha pyrones, low molecular phenolic acids and triterpenes.
  • Humins and humic acid
  • Fulvic acids, the carrier molecules.
  • Other molecules include amino acids, eldagic acid, sterols, aromatic carboxylic acids, polysaccharides and lignins etc.
  • Trace elements like iron, magnesium, potassium, copper, calcium and zinc etc.

The first class compounds, low molecular compounds are the major entities. Next in the row are fulvic acids that act as carrier molecules for the bioactive substances during transportation. The trace elements have various medicinal properties.

How can you estimate the purity of shilajit?

The real shilajit is a great natural substance and is very costly in India due to which market has both the mixture of pure and low grade mixed shilajit. So how to choose. The answer is purity tests.

1. FIRST TEST IS ITS SOLUBILITY

Take warm water or warm milk and dissolve shilajit in it. It starts to dissolve slowly and with time finally dissolve fully. It produces golden or reddish liquid.

2. INSOLUBILITY

Shilajit is insoluble in alcohol and vodka. It makes clots when gets dissolved in these substances.

3. PLIABILITY

Take shilajit in your hands. It starts to melt and gets sticky. It becomes hard when keep in refrigerator.

4. FLAME TEST

When you put shilajit on flame, it start bubbling but is not burnt.

By checking the purity of shilajit it can be used in the treatment of diseases.
