Lars and I have just come back from a very crowded - and wet - Belgian Beer Festival, here in Brussels. This is an annual event, that takes place at the Grand Place and is organized by the Belgian Brewers Association. From 4 until 6 September 2015 you can taste (a lot of) beer at dozens of stands and stalls.
First thing to do when you arrive is to buy one token (€3) for a glass and a minimum of 10 capsules (€10) for the beers. Each beer that you can taste will cost between 1 and 3 capsules. You can trade in the token once you have finished tasting and get your money back.
What did we taste?
- A Chimay blue, one of the few Belgian trappists. If you want to know what a trappist is, read this. Lars and I chose a dark one, because they tend to be sweeter.
- Time for something new: a Hoegaarden rosé! The Blanche of Hoegaarden has a very good international reputation, but there are fruity versions of this beer as well. The rosé is made with raspberries. We both liked it, but it could have been a bit sweeter for me.
- Super des Fagnes scotch: my absolute favorite. I like Super des Fagnes, but it is difficult to find it in Brussels. If you want to drink it, you actually have to go to the Ardennes. The scotch version, which we had never tasted before was sublime, because it was quite sweet. And strong!
- St Feuillien - Cap d'Or: also a newcomer for us. I must have been in a very good mood this afternoon, because I usually don't drink blond beers, whereas Lars is less picky. But I have to admit that I loved it! Would be excellent as an aperitif. By the way, this is an abbey beer.
