Before the Novel, An Appetizer: “Smashing Pumpkins”

Smashing Pumpkins: A Short Story

In case you’re wondering if you would enjoy my fictional writing, I’ve decided to post a short story I wrote a little while back as a little appetizer of my writing style an my upcoming novel. This story is unrelated to the novel, and while it isn’t more of a romance like the one I’ve written and am about to publish, it is about a young girl whose mother has left her and her dad. She is angry, and she wants to get back at her mother.

The original story had a sweet resolution to it, but my friend, Amy Nelson, convinced me to leave all the “happy, happy” stuff out of it. After mulling it over for a while, I decided to do as she said, and so the story ends in a somewhat untidy fashion. However, with short stories, we can do that. We can leave readers hanging and wondering about the characters a little more than we can when we write a novel.

If you have a few moments, check it out, and let me know what you think. Would you have liked to have learned what happened to Janie and her mother, and even her father?
