I think most of us can attest to seeing that familiar beige jar of petroleum jelly in our medicine cabinets as a child. They were used for everything – from treating burns and wounds to softening rough, cracked heels, and protect your lips from a cold day outside. It’s a staple, and no one should be without it.
However, conventional petroleum jelly can be cross contaminated by unknown toxins and chemicals, and seeing as we’re an active part of the Green Beauty Community, that’s something we’d all like to avoid.
Enter the alternative! Beeseline, created by the founders of Delizioso Skincare (see my interview with them here!) created Beeseline as an answer to replace “pure” petroleum jelly. It’s 100% natural and safe, and does everything regular petroleum jelly does – without the risks of uncertainty or unwanted exposure.
I received a jar of it as a sample and it’s sitting in my bathroom, happily being used by the family to replace petroleum jelly. Beeseline is unscented and has the similar creamy texture as conventional petroleum jelly. It’s easy to scoop, spread and wipes off easily as well. Beeseline is made of 3 simple ingredients – coconut oil, beeswax and honey. (They sell a vegan version as well, Vegaline). It’s proof that you really don’t need all that extra bling for an effective product.
I also used it for several reasons – let’s review how it worked for each one!
1) To soften my cracked lips overnight: A few days ago, the weather was unusually dry and I was dehydrated, so my lips were cracking. Instead of using my usual lip balm, I opted for Beeseline. At night, I spread some on my lips and went to bed. The next day, my lips were softer, but not “healed” yet. I gently exfoliated (with Beeseline on) and that night, I applied some more. That did the trick – the cracking was gone and my lips were very smooth on the second morning. So far, so good!
2) To soften my feet: I have notoriously dry feet. I guess it’s because I prefer walking around barefoot and feel that socks are constricting (blame my constant slipper footwear being raised in Hawai’i!) I was hoping that Beeseline would help me soften my dry feet and heels. After a shower, I applied a generous amount to my heels, toes and soles, then slipped on socks and went to sleep. My heels were definitely softer the next morning, and it didn’t take much effort at all! This is a cheap way to soften multiple parts of your body without having to buy a separate cream for each one.
3) To soothe a cut: I managed to actually cut myself a few days before the jar of Beeseline arrived. So, I applied a tiny bit to it – first around it, then right on it. It didn’t hurt! I covered it with a band-aid and my cut healed pretty quickly. I’d like to think the Beeseline helped. It definitely felt soothing and nourishing, and was very gentle. Also, the honey in Beeseline is a natural anti-bacterial.
4) Makeup remover: Finally, I tried it as a makeup remover. Using a cotton pad, it removed most of my makeup in one swipe, and another rounded off the rest. It may feel a little greasy to some, but it washes off easily and besides, the coconut oil in Beeseline is also used to remove makeup by natural beauty enthusiasts, so there’s no reason Beeseline wouldn’t work! It did – so yet, another reason to keep a jar around.
Final thoughts?
Beeseline will become your new staple and it’s definitely worth the small investment. This gentle, all-purpose product will definitely start replacing other products in your bathroom. This and coconut oil have permanent homes in my bathroom!
