Beer Review – Dundee Oktoberfest

While attempting to find a good Oktoberfest beer, I picked up a bottle of Dundee Oktoberfest. Billed as a Märzen-style lager, the Oktoberfest is produced by Dundee Brewing Company, which is part of the Genesee Brewing Company and owned by North American Breweries. I had my first experience with Dundee and their Honey Brown Lager almost 20 years ago, and have occasionally gone back to it, so when I saw the Dundee Oktoberfest, I thought I would give it a try.

Here is what Dundee has to say about their Oktoberfest:

A traditional fragrant and full-bodied lager. A unique combination of specialty malts, including Caramel 60, Vienna, Munich and Chocolate, produces this amber-colored brew with a rich, sweet malty finish that makes it a perfect transition from light summer beers to heavier winter brews.

I found the Dundee Oktoberfest to have the following characteristics…

  • Appearance: Clear dark orange with a quickly dissipating foam.
  • Aroma: Sweet malt.
  • Taste: Sweet malt, thin and a little flat.
  • ABV: 5.5%

This was a thin, easy drinking beer, but it wasn’t particularly flavorful or exceptional. It was a very average beer and for an Oktoberfest, a little bit lacking.
