Beer Battered Mushrooms

By Melissak

I love stick food.  Yes, I know that might seem like a strange statement, but golly gosh I do.  Its that on the go snack that I just cant get enough of and when you’re done eating you have a little spear, for you know in  case the zombie apocalypse starts.

This is a delicious spiced beer battered mushrooms ( the mushrooms did not suffer any abuse),   Its great for parties, picnics or just an any time snack.  Feel free to coat the mushrooms in breadcrumbs for a crunchier feel. You can also leave the mushrooms whole, I prefer cutting them in half, because I’ve got a serious issue with the consistency.

Ingredients

  • 1 package white button mushrooms, halved
  • 3/4 cup beer ( choose a beer you enjoy)
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • skewers
  • Oil for frying

Directions

Tip: If you want a more flavourful batter its best to combine everything and let rest in the fridge overnight, but you can also just use the batter immediately.

In a medium sized bowl mix together all the ingredients, except the mushrooms (and I think its pretty obvious not to mix the skewers in a bowl).

Pour about an inch of oil in a heavy bottomed pan and warm it over medium high heat.  Dip the mushrooms in the battered making sure its coated all around.  When the oil is hot, carefully drop the mushrooms in and let them fry until golden brown.  Be careful, because they brown rather fast.  Continue until all the mushrooms are done.

Skewer 4 mushrooms on each skewer.  Make a dipping sauce of choice or eat as is.
