Beauty | Chatting Makeup With A MUA

By Megan Lillie @meganjanelillie
Beauty | Chatting Makeup With A MUAI'm all for celebrating and bigging up things from my hometown so recently I caught up with Sam from Samantha Waring Make-Up Artistry to talk about all things makeup and being a MUA.
After college, Sam originally was going to study for a hospitality management degree, however after feeling the pressure of University she decided to go against norms and follow something that she felt passionate about. She undertook a BTEC Diploma in Production Arts where she could learn about the art and get creative in practical elements. She then went on to study for a degree in Fashion & Media Make-Up Artistry in Manchester, which is a course that gets several hundreds of applicants and only around 80 places. After falling in love with Lisa Eldridge's early work in many-a Elle magazine, it was an amazing opportunity for Sam to learn key skills and work her way into the industry. She feels as if this has been her most prominent part of her career so far and reassured her that she was doing the right thing.
Sam is in her fifth year of make-up and is based back in Teesside, pushing herself as an MUA since Christmas whilst working in retail to support the business. As a beauty blogger, I totally get that make-up is not the cheapest of hobbies! She has mainly been doing weddings and proms and particularly enjoys weddings as she feels that she is part of the experience and it is nice to know that she has made them feel beautiful on their special day. She especially loves working on the skin and creating a flawless base as she identifies that it is most important. When talking about how big 'contouring' is now, she says it has always been a 'thing' for MUAs and it is one of first lessons you are taught. She loves contouring clients and when people know what they are doing, it can look amazing yet people expect to look like the Kardashians, which is not the case!
We delved into Sam's kit to talk about all of the make-up goodness! It was no surprise to see a lot of MAC products and Sam tells me that there is such a huge variety in their products and not to mention the great discount. However, she loves to use a mixture of high end and drugstore. Although it is good to use lots of high end as it sets a good image and is nice to use on clients, there are some products from the drugstore Sam loves to use, such as S&G's Brow Archery. As for brushes, it was great to see lots of Crownbrush & MAC and also a brand I had never heard of before, Royal & Langickel. Looking at eyeshadows there were lots of neutrals and vibrant shades and Sam said she loves to do something 'over the top' at times and wishes that she could do more bold looks on clients, however, fashion opts for a neutral beauty look at the moment.
Over the next few years Sam is going to keep persisting and working as a make-up artist whilst building up her brand and portfolio. She is also going to try and get into more editorial work by being involved with as many photoshoots as she can. Make sure you keep up to date with her Facebook page!
