Bag of Bones would like to borrow a pair of your hands, we assume, for the hypnotic pitter-patter sounds creating the simple backbeat in their first song, “A Pair of Your Hands”. I imagine the making of this song looked a lot like one of those scenes in Scooby Doo where they catch the bad guy. Now hear me out — not only does this song have an undeniably eerie vibe to it, but the song remains so simple that you can hear as each lever is pulled to introduce the next element, similar to how those meddling kids would always set up elaborate scenarios with steps leading the villains into their traps. The ghostly voice trances in first, followed by the tapping hands. Then small “bah bah bop’s,” baritone “doo doo doo’s” and other tiny flourishes (my favorite being the rollicking impersonation of a machine coming to life) that have me convinced Bag of Bones is just a barbershop quartet comprised of a group of skeletons. It’s capped off by a far-off sounding brass instrument — I don’t understand it all, but I loved every second of it.
