When your other half claims she has "nothing to wear", you may not believe it - but she certainly does, and here's why.
The average American woman has 103 items of clothing in her closet - more than enough to put together outfits for any occasion, you might think.
But she considers 21 per cent to be "unwearable", 33 per cent too tight and 24 per cent too loose, according to a survey of 1,000 US women by ClosetMaid.
A further 12 per cent of the wardrobe is occupied by new, unworn clothing, leaving just 10 per cent available. And 10 per cent - well, that's not really an outfit, is it?
Ten per cent say they feel depressed when they open their closet and 47 per cent admit they struggle to pick out an outfit before heading out to work.
One in four confess that their clothes storage space is completely disorganized and when faced with the carnage within, over 60 per cent will instead buy new clothing and one in six will sneak an item out of the laundry basket.
Valerie Cavallaro, VP of Digital Commerce for Closetmaid, a leading provider of home storage and organization, said: "It's no wonder so many women are depressed about their closets when they are not happy with its contents.
"Couple that with it being a disorganized mess and you have a recipe for real dissatisfaction and added stress."
Over four in ten women don't like ANY of their clothes. Reasons include the items being out of style, uncomfortable, ripped/torn or stained.
In order to be better prepared for a social event, half plan their outfit a day or two before they actually wear it. Still, 45 per cent believe they have nothing to wear as the date looms and will go out and buy something new.
On average, women buy two items of clothing online and three items in-store each month but one in seven have bought something they already had because they couldn't find it.
Seventy-eight percent regret buying certain clothes, and nearly a quarter return clothes they purchased at least once per month.
The average home has four closets, and 45 per cent don't bother changing out the clothes in their closets seasonally. A secretive one in seven hides some clothing purchases from her partner or spouse.
Cavallaro added: "So much time and money is wasted searching for lost and missing things so it's not surprising the angst disorganization can create.
"Having an organized closet will help people bring a sense of order to their homes so that they can look forward to opening their closet doors and getting a positive start to their day."
