Authorities Float 4 Options for Bullet Train’s Route Into Palmdale

SACRAMENTO – The high-speed rail authority does not appear to be slowing down with ideas on how to connect Burbank to Palmdale.

The California High-Speed Rail Blog, http://www.cahsrblog.com, on Wednesday outlined four different routes for the train’s Burbank-to-Palmdale path – three of which include long tunnels under various sections of the San Gabriel Mountains.

CHSRA planners are hoping to keep the local high-speed enterprise alive with options that provide more popular alternatives to the train traveling along Highway 14 through Acton and Santa Clarita.

Visualizing where the nearly $68-billion bullet train could end up traveling in the Antelope Valley, the high-speed rail authority proposed the following three alternatives to its default Highway 14 alignment option:

— First East Corridor Route (E1): As the westernmost option for the three East Corridor routes, this alternative includes a tunnel that branches off the San Fernando Road corridor near Whiteman Airport and goes under Pacoima as well as the mountains, emerging along the Metrolink tracks near Soledad Canyon.

— Second East Corridor Route (E2): This alternative features a tunnel under Burbank Airport that becomes a bridge across the Tujunga Wash, which becomes a tunnel again until it hits Soledad Canyon.

— Third East Corridor (E3): As the easternmost option, this route involves a tunnel from Burbank Airport to the Antelope Valley north of the Vincent Grade.
