Attitude Marks a Learner’s Progress in Learning English Language

By Tlb

Learners who choose English as the language to be learned often choose to learn English at language school because they know they will learn more. Yes, we cannot deny the fact that there is what we term as “independent learners” where they can and are able to learn English by themselves. They are capable of learning English and even improve it by just reading English articles and novels, watching English movies, immersing in English culture, and so on. But most students really prefer going to schools. It’s the most sufficient and so far the most efficient way they know in acquiring English excellently.

Yet, during the learning process, a learner will really undergo such difficulty in acquiring English. Yes, English is so far the easiest language to be learned but still some learners will still find difficulties in acquiring it. What could be the problem with it?

A forum was posted in a certain site where a student is wondering of an efficient method in learning English. This is what the post said: “I’m studying English. But my English ability is low and I’m so tired more and more. I know that language is not improving for short time. Time has past 6 months since I started to study English. Maybe I think that my studying method have to be corrected. What should I do? Nowadays I have studied English going English institute. I have a lot of homework and task almost everyday, so I do not have my private studying time…It’s my lame excuse, But If you know efficiently learning English method, tell me, please? I will wait your intellectual response.”

Reading this post made me think that actually, it’s not the learner that has a problem with his learning process. It’s actually how he responds to it. That’s why attitude is a very important factor to consider in deciding a learner’s progress in learning English language.

No matter how prestigious his foreign language school may be, if his attitude marks laziness and mediocrity, then the excellence of the school would be counted as vain. If the learner on the other hand is showing enthusiasm and excellence in their learning, no matter what learning method he used, he will acquire the efficiency of English that he desires.

Take note of this respond to the post above in italic form: “I don’t agree that your English ability is low. For one thing, I understand what you are saying. Also, you have surely come a long way from when you didn’t know anything about it. I will make my advice general. First, be patient with yourself. It is not unusual for someone to reach a point where he doesn’t seem to be making much progress. Second, take every opportunity to practice what you know. If you think it will help, I will correct any errors I find in your postings. Your English is much better than my Korean will ever be.”
