What’s new, Metalheads! I’m going to introduce today a Brazilian Avant-garde/Extreme Metal band from Rio de Janeiro which has released a debut full-length album entitled “Crown” with a great sound which you should not miss. I’m talking about As Dramatic Homage, a musical project from composer, vocalist and guitarist Alexandre Pontes.
As Dramatic Homage was born in 1999 as a Black Metal band with doom elements which has developed its particular sound showing us an Extreme Metal sound full of experimental parts, some progressive elements and different touches with many influences, achieving a highly recommended sound, powerful, atmospheric and perturbing, full of energy with a result very cool.
This is an Alexandre’s personal musical project, he is composer, lyricist, guitarist and vocalist from As Dramatic Homage, it’s a project with a deep dimension and a dark concept that revolves around elementary themes of mankind, existential and philosophical thoughts on the antagonistic behavior of human beings to themselves, their beliefs and attitudes.
After two As Dramatic Homage’s demos entitled “A Deep Inner Recital” (2001) and “Atmosphere of Pain / Anthems of Hate” (2005) with different members on the line-up of the band, they released a single with two songs in 2010 entitled “Ominous Force for Ascension” and finally in 2012 Alexandre Pontes presents us the As Dramatic Homage’s first full-length album entitled “Crown”.
He has carried out all the technical aspects of the recording of this album, from lyrics and compositions to vocals, rhythm and lead guitars and programming. Now As Dramatic Homage’s line-up is formed by Alexandre Pontes on guitars and vocals, Alexandre Trindade on bass, Alexandre Carreiro on lead guitars, Antony Vinco on keyboards and Julio Cesar on drums.
After an intro called “Lessons”, we can find on “Crown” album eight interesting tracks starting by the fantastic “Monumetal” with a brutal sound and a cool alternation between growl and melodic voices. “The Icon Omniprentent” is another great track envolved in a dark atmophere, with awesome choruses and good change of pace, showing us an Alexandre more melodic on vocals, I think this is really a great song on the album.
Continuing our journey through the album we can enjoy a quiet and intimate passage entitled “Journey Inside” with an impressive starting and a great work of Alexandre on vocals aswell on guitars, this track is really intense, deep and emotional.
With the great short song “Redemption”, returns the uneasiness and agressivity on vocals with an angry Alexandre send us a powerful message about religion on lyrics. “Idyllic” is another fantastic song in which we can find the global concept of As Dramatic Homage and the universe around which revolves, the introspection and search for answers about existence and life directly within ourselves, this is an awesome and perturbing song full of energy with fantastic melody and wrapped in a dark atmosphere with good changes of pace and alternation between agressive and melodic voices.

“From The Battle Of Pain” is another recommended song in the album, it’s simply brutal and “The Age Of Transition” is an instrumental end song with a hidden message, it’s only my opinion, I think the full album is really a complete journey through the human existence’s concept, which starts with some “lessons”, exposed through the songs of the album and the messages inside of them, and ends with an perturbing eye on the horizon and an open door for a change and to an introspective “age of transition” after those “lessons” exposed about life and human existence.
I don’t know if my assessment is correct, it is just my own overview of the album, in any case I hope Alexandre correct me if I’m wrong.
