Another Reason to Eat Your Greens…to Protect Your Heart

By Acandee @andreacandee

Canadian university studies found that consuming generous amounts of fruits and raw vegetables can modify a gene called 9p21, the strongest marker for heart disease. In one of the largest studies ever done for connecting diet to genes related to cardiovascular disease, 27,000  people from multiple ethnicities had their diets analyzed for their effect on this specific heart related gene.

It was found that people with a high risk for the cardiovascular gene who consumed a diet high in raw vegetables and fruits had a risk similar to that of people at low risk.  While it is known that the 9p21 gene increases the risk of heart disease, it was surprising to the scientists to find that a diet high in vegetables and fruits could significantly weaken its effect creating the same low risk as people carrying the low-risk genotype.
