Another 1-game Scouting Report for Yakupov and Grigorenko

By Kicks @Chrisboucher73
Russia's Nail Yakupov and Mikhail Grigorenko are both ranked among the top-5 players available for the upcoming 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Yakupov is a 5'11", 161 lbs left-handed winger, while Grigorenko is a 6'2", 185 lbs  left-handed center. This one-game scouting report is from team Russia's 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in the World Junior Championship's quarter-final game on January 2nd.
Mikhail Grigorenko was hurt in Russia's previous game. As such, his ice-time was limited. Yakupov had a slow start to the game. He actually didn't touch the puck in either of his first two shifts. When a player with magic hands and feet like Yakupov doesn't touch the puck, he is simply an ineffective passenger on the ice.
OVERALL GRADE
Yakupov had the higher overall grade. As mentioned earlier, he had substantially more ice-time than the injured Grigorenko. Yakupov's grade was helped by his work in the offensive-zone. His ability to get the puck to the front of the net either by carrying, shooting, or passing the puck is one of his most impressive attributes.

OVERALL RISK/REWARD RATING
Yakupov also had the higher overall risk/reward rating. He had a 1.89 rating to go along with an overall ratio of 2.29 successful plays for every 1 mistake or lost puck-battle. His rating was the product of his work in the offensive-zone.
Grigorenko's overall risk/reward rating was only 0.48, while his overall ratio was 1.44 successful plays for every 1 mistake or lost puck-battle. Grigorenko had few events in the game. As such, the information contained here should be taken with a grain of salt.

OFFENSIVE-ZONE RISK/REWARD RATING
As mentioned earlier, Yakupov's overall rating was carried by his work in the offensive-zone. He had an o-zone rating of 0.91, and an offensive-zone ratio of 2.30 successful plays for every 1 mistake or lost puck-battle. He recovered 6 o-zone loose-pucks, while completing 7 of his 10 pass-attempts. He also was able to get 4 of his 7 attempted shots through to the net.
Grigorenko had an offensive zone rating of 0.24 and an o-zone ratio of 3 successful plays for every 1 mistake or lost puck-battle. His o-zone ratio was actually higher than Yakupov, but a limited amount of events per-minute played hurt his rating. He won his only o-zone puck-battle, while completing both of his attempted passes.

DEFENSIVE-ZONE RISK/REWARD RATING
As a centre, Grigorenko normally has the better d-zone rating. His position normally requires him to get involved in more d-zone events than Yakupov. That said, Yakupov actually had the better d-zone rating in this game. he had a d-zone rating 0.63 to go along with a ratio of 2.29 successful plays for every 1 mistake or lost puck-battle. He won 1 of 2 d-zone puck-battles, recovered 4 loose-pucks, and completed 8 of 11 d-zone passes. A winger with a solid d-zone passing percentage is generally a strong sign of how successfully a team is able to maneuver the puck out of its own end.
Grigorenko had a d-zone rating of 0.48 and a defensive-zone ratio of 1.67. He recovered 6 loose-pucks and completed 2 of his 3 d-zone passes. He was successful with only 1 of his 4 attempts to dump the puck out of the defensive-zone.

NEUTRAL-ZONE RISK/REWARD RATING
Yakupov had a solid neutral-zone risk/reward rating, while Grigorenko struggled in the neutral-zone. Keep in mind Grigorenko's speed and agility were hurt by his injury.
Yakupov had a neutral-zone risk/reward rating of 0.35 and a neutral-zone ratio of 2.25 successful plays for every 1 mistake or lost puck-battle. He won 2 of 3 n-zone puck-battles, recovered 4 loose-pucks and completed both of his attempted passes.
Grigorenko wasn't able to complete 1 successful event in the neutral-zone. As such, his n-zone rating was in the minus (-0.31). A negative rating shows that a player made more unsuccessful than successful plays. He failed with each of his 3 neutral-zone pass-attempts.
