instead of number one operating system for smartphones in the U.S., said Tuesday the research firm Kantar Worldpanel.

During the twelve weeks ending October 31, the market share of iOS – the mobile operating system from Apple – has more than doubled compared to the same period one year ago, reaching 48.1% not far from the record 49.3% reached in early 2012.

The market share of Android has slipped from 63.3% to 46.7% over the same period, according to data from Kantar Worldpanel, but Google’s platform (GOOG) continues to lead the main European markets.

Its combined market share of the top five European markets rose 64% against 51% a year earlier, while Apple has gained one percentage point to 21%.
