An Indoor Sandbox That Works in Any Room for Less Than $52

The Idea

Children love playing in sand! During the summer the beaches and backyards across the country provide hours of imaginative play.

When the weather starts to change we need to be a little bit more creative ourselves to keep our children’s imagination engaged.

Whether you have a full playroom or one family space that serves both parent and child, you can have an indoor sand box.

The Design

I wanted to keep the design of this sand table consistent with the look of a coffee table but also able to contain art materials. If you are trying to make a small space into something multi-functional, a childish table is not going to work for you.

This is one of the simplest projects we have ever done. I basically put together two components, a found as-is IKEA drawer which I carried upstairs and matched to a coffee table base. I chose LACK because of the price, the sturdiness and the storage shelf underneath either for art items or anything else you might need. Extra storage is always a plus.

The Materials

Indoor Sand table materials

  • 1 LACK coffee table
  • 1 KOMPLEMENT drawer, or look for another drawer in the As-is department and match it to a table size
  • Loctite Power Grab
  • Art materials of your choice. I used Kinetic Sand but rice, beans or dried noodles could be a less expensive alternative

The Process

Watch the video first, these instructions are meant to help you remember the order or answer any additional questions

  • Paint any unfinished edges on your drawer — often the part that faces the back is not completely finished. I used black and it blended right in
  • Put together the LACK coffee table following the IKEA instructions
  • Make small piles of adhesive around the top of the coffee table. They need some height because the bottom of the drawer is recessed slightly and a flat bead of adhesive will not reach the bottom of the drawer
  • Put any art materials you like in the top tray and have fun!
  • I recommend using a container or a tray so you can easily remove the sand and toys when you can control their use

The Outcome

This small table fits into my client’s tiny playroom perfectly, and there is no greater reward than an engaged child to let you know your project is a success!
