The Amish Cheese Shop in Cambridge City, Indiana is just too good to drive by without a stop inside.What was once an abandoned gas station has been turned into Wayne County cheese lover’s destination since its beginning in 1983!

This shop is small but there are still shelves and shelves of cheese! Many of the cheeses come from Heini’s cheese company in Holmes County Ohio that sources milk from the area Amish. Though not Amish owned, that cheese is how the place got it’s start though they have since expanded their offerings to include other well-made cheeses from other cheese makers. There are over sixty kinds of cheeses available here made with Amish milk!
We saw (and sampled) so many cheeses! That was the really neat thing about this shop. You didn’t have to guess that you would like something. In front of each row of blocks of cheese there was a small cup of cubed cheese. Toothpicks were nearby to make for easy tasting. The oldest and I had so much fun trying a few new kinds. At one point he made a horrible face–he had sampled a two year old Swiss cheese! I still chuckle when I think of that. Apparently an 8 year old palette is not quite ready for that one!
There was Danish Blue Cheese, Applewood Smoked Cheddar, Firehouse Cheddar, Danish Dill Havarti, Smoked Amish Gouda Cheese, Smoked Horseradish Cheese, Herb and Garlic Cheese, Jalapeno Yogurt Cheese, Blueberry Cheddar, and so many more. Why, there’s even a line of lactose-free cheeses!
The shop keeper told me that her favorite is the Green Onion Cheese. Oh my goodness. It was so fantastic!

As excellent as the cheese may be, there’s even more items to savor in this Amish cheese shop!There’s a line of pickles and relishes, popcorn, beef jerky, crackers, candies, and even jams and jellies. The jams and jellies are free of high fructose corn syrup.
Indiana products are found here too, like honey, maple syrup, and in season produce. During our visit, there were even baked goods! They may be seasonally inspired, too!

What a fun, fun destination in Central Indiana! We loved the Amish Cheese Shop in Cambridge City, Indiana!You can bet I am looking forward to a return trip though I am very happy to see that they also do business online. Win/win.
