Adventures in Bozcaada

By Tjbh13

It’s been quite a while since I started to write about the long weekend spend touring Çanakkale.  I’ve been a little sidetracked lately.  To bring you up to date, Day 1 was a trip from Ankara to Bursa, with a stop to eat İnegöl Köfte in İnegöl.  Day 2 started with a trip from Bursa to Troy.

Day 2 of our trip to Çanakkale ended with a trip from Troy to Bozcaada.  Bozcaada, known by the Greeks as Tenedos, is an island of Turkey in the northern part of the Aegean Sea.  It is said that Tenedos is where the Greeks hid their fleet at the end of the Trojan War.

It was only a short drive from Troy.  But we were met with a decision to make:  take the ferry and walk the island, or take the car on the ferry.  We chose the first method.  It seemed a good idea at the time.

Upon arrival, the first stop is the castle.  We had little time, and had been to many castles so we skipped it.  Here is a photo I borrowed from Wikipedia:

The front of the island, where the arrival port was, is chock full of little shops, restaurants, and hotels.  The rest of the island is scattered with fields of grapes and wineries.  We thought in order to make the best of what time we had, that we should take a small tour bus.

That idea was both good and bad.  It was good because we got to see most of the island.  It was bad because the driver only stopped at one winery, his friend’s place, and it was crowded with people at the time.  You have to be really really pushy to get a taste.  Believe it or not, I was not pushy enough!

The second stop was at a high peak, so we could take in the scenery.

I love the next shot.  Can you guess why they have 17 turbines in Bozcaada?

After this stop, our driver took us to watch the sunset.  This was absolutely gorgeous!  But, it was also the reason I should have brought my own car on the ferry.  We got there early and sat for at least 2 hours.  Since we had a deadline to get back to the ferry, we had little time touring the island and drinking the wine compared to the time spent sitting here.

I highly suggest a visit to Bozcaada.  Take your car.  Spend at least a day and night.  Stay in a comfortable boutique hotel.  Watch the sunset.  Take the time to count the boats on the water.  And when you are done . . .

. . take the time to watch the moon rise too!
