Adopt Me! Dog Yancey Is Grateful for His Second ChanceHome. Some pets never have one to call their own. We’d like to help change that by introducing you to an extraordinary adoptable pet every week. Today, we’d like you to meet Yancey, a friendly beagle mix who escaped euthanasia by just a few hours.

Something about his picture tugged at Cindy Peterson’s heart. The adorable young beagle was to be euthanized at a Crowley, La., animal shelter that afternoon if she or one of the other volunteers at the Hokies Hounds Beagle Rescue didn’t open their home to him.

“We didn’t really have the room for him,” says Peterson, the founder of the rescue, who already fosters several dogs. “But we took him in anyway and I’m glad we did.”

As Peterson headed home with a tail-wagging Yancey in the backseat of her car, she knew he was grateful to be alive.

“He seemed to say, ‘I don’t know your name, lady, but I sure do appreciate you putting me in your car,’” she says.

Over the past four weeks, the 3-year-old pooch has embraced his new lease on life. He gets along very well with Peterson’s other fosters as well as her 10-year-old son.

“He’s doing well socially, he’s adjusting to people and he’s a very personable dog,” she says. “There would have been no reason to euthanize this dog.”

Though Yancey’s dewclaw, or inner toe, was painfully overgrown and was embedded in his paw, it’s nearly cleared up thanks to a few treatments by a local vet. He is affectionate, playful and very handsome – the perfect dog for a young family or couple looking for some fun. “He’s a just a real regal looking fellow that has a very good personality,” Peterson says.
