Access Files on Your Computer from Anywhere

The problem is that you have documents, photos, music and important files on your computer at home. How can “outsource” these files from your computer at work or when you’re away from your phone?

The solution: The easiest solution would be to copy all data from your home computer to access a portable hard drive and carry it around but this is obviously a bit ‘bulky, as an approach to manually synchronize your home computer and the disc requires your laptop.
Accessing files on your computer over the Internet

There are several options that allow you to retrieve files from elsewhere on your home computer stored with a normal internet connection.

Option 1: Use the Online Backup

You can use an online backup service like SugarSync, Carbonite, Dropbox and SkyDrive or – offer desktop programs that automatically delete files from your home computer to the Internet and you can then access files through your Web browser from any computer with internet access.

The advantage is that files are always available to you even if your computer is not at home. SugarSync and Carbonite have a mobile website optimized so you can access files from any phone, as well.

The disadvantage is that if one of these services are for the first time, you must wait until load all your data in the cloud, and this process can be slow if you have too many files on your home computer.

Option 2: Using the Desktop Sharing

There are free desktop sharing software, TeamViewer, and how this can also UltraVNC remotely from your computer files anywhere else. CrossLoop and LogMeIn Pro departure are some other good options for transferring files from a remote computer, but these are paid services.

If all of your computer using Windows, you can use the built-in Remote Desktop Connection for Windows (XP and later) to access your home computer from another Windows computer on the Internet.

Option 3: Access to files directly from your browser

Online backup services, as discussed above will copy the files on your server before you can log on anywhere else. Screen-sharing are often slow and does not work on most mobile devices. Let’s look at another set of services that you download the files directly from your computer to do at home.

Copernic, Google Desktop is a popular desktop search software that allows you to find e-mail, documents and other files on your Windows computer. They pay a component called myCopernic on the Go, the remote for the content on your home computer or office can be saved search. You can preview the results of research and then upload it to your phone or remote PC.

With Opera Unite, you can easily connect your computer to a Web server and instant access to files and folders on your computer using a web browser (including mobile phones). Opera Unite is a standard web server and then downloading the file directly from your computer – do not load elsewhere.

Another option is to configure a virtual private network Gbridge can use your existing Google Account. Companies use VPN to allow employees to access company data securely over a public network (Internet) and Gbridge, home users can also build their own virtual private networks, remote files and more.

Windows Live Sync on sync.live.com is another good choice for remote access to files on the Internet. Just install the Live Sync client on your computer and you can then access your entire hard drive of your computer with ease via the website of Windows Live Sync.

Live Sync is available for Mac and Windows. The new version of Live Sync is even better, and is integrated on-line storage (Live Mesh), so as to be able to access important files, even if the remote computer is off.

Finally, you might also want to check HomePipe – this is a very simple and free service that lets you access media files for home and from any computer or mobile phone. Install HomePipe agent and all files on your computer will be available on the web. They also have applications for the iPhone and Android phones.
