A Weekend In Grenada

By Fitfulfocus @fitfulfocus

Last weekend, I had the privilege of spending four glorious days in Grenada thanks to JetBlue, Sandals Resorts and the Grenadian Tourism Board

The weekend started with a 4am wake up call on Thursday morning. I got up, got dressed, and headed to the airport for the inaugural JetBlue flight to what is considered “The Spice of the Caribbean.” I knew right away that this wouldn’t be an ordinary flight. They had turned the gate into a party!

After breakfast, music and a ribbon cutting ceremony, we boarded the plane. There weren’t any class divisions, so basically everyone was sitting in first class. Score! First timer right here! The entire flight crew were native Grenadians. They were lovely, the flight was lovely and there was even a raffle filled with great prizes on board. Alas, I didn’t win, but I was in an extra space seat, so I was already a winner!

When we landed, the party continued. We were greeted with more music and dancing and excited speeches from everyone involved in the new JetBlue/Grenada partnership.

After that, it was off to our resort: Sandals LaSource, which was (no exaggeration) 2 minutes from the airport. The resort was simply stunning. Check out my room:

Believe it or not, this wasn’t even close to the nicest room at the resort. Check out the bathroom in one of their Rondoval Suites (which comes with a butler and a private pool btw).

I spent some time exploring the resort over the course of the weekend. Here’s a little visual taste:

And of course, I enjoyed the food.

The fruit. I could rave about the fruit for days. SO AMAZING!

On Friday, we went on a tour of the island. We saw gorgeous views and visited Fort Frederick…

…and then enjoyed some river tubing thanks to the awesome Adventure Tours

After we were fully soaked, it was off to lunch at Belmont Estate. We got a taste of Caribbean cuisine before getting a tour of how they make their chocolate. The whole process is 100% organic and done by hand (and foot as you’ll see in some of the pictures below) over weeks and weeks to yield the perfect dark chocolate, which we got to sample. You can learn more about how Grenadians make their delicious chocolate here

Our last stop on the island tour was the River Antoine Rum distillery. We walked around the property and I got to chatting with our tour guide all about how they make their organic rum that has become so popular on the island. I’ll be writing a whole piece on this for The Daily Meal, so stay tuned for more! I will say that straight up 70 proof rum is not for the faint of heart (or stomach)

Saturday, Sandals took us on a 20 minute boat ride out onto the water to snorkel and explore the world’s first underwater sculpture park. I’m not a big swimmer, but I thoroughly enjoyed the warm turquoise waters, the beautiful fish and the cool sculptures.

We had the afternoon to relax around the resort, and then we headed over to another resort on the island: Spice Island Beach Resort. We toured around and were each given rooms to enjoy for the afternoon and freshen up for dinner. I didn’t get a room; I got a cottage! I had a personal pool, a sauna (totally used it), a huge bedroom and a mega bathroom.

After enjoying the room for a bit, I headed to the beach to watch the sunset.

Gorgeous, huh?

Then it was time for what ended up being the most amazing meal I’ve had in a very long time. I’ll be going into full detail of this meal for The Daily Meal, as well, but here’s a sneak peak.

I pretty much rolled into bed that night like Violet from Willy Wonka after that feast.

Our flight on Sunday wasn’t until 2:18, so we were able to enjoy the morning at the resort. I walked on the beach one last time, and Sandals treated me to an unbelievable massage. I definitely didn’t want to leave, but alas, back to reality I had to go.

Now I’m back in NYC, and I’m dreaming of beaches, sunshine and of course, all of the amazing fruit.

Huge thank you to The Daily Meal, JetBlue, Sandals, The Grenadian Tourism Board, and Spice Island Beach Resort for such an incredible and unforgettable trip! I definitely hope to go back to the island on day (hopefully soon!)
