A Taste of Japan at Kawaii Cafe – A Japanese Cafe in Cebu

By Vanessa Kay @blushinggeek

I don’t make it a secret that I’m a fan of Japan – from anime, music, culture, the people and the country as a whole. I’m not really sure when my fascination to Japan started but lately, I had this  unrelenting desire to learn more about Japan, especially their language. I don’t have enough budget to go to Japan and the closest that I could do is to go to Kawaii Cafe, a Japanese cafe here in Cebu.

Together with my two good friends, we decided to meet up every month to do some food tripping. With the busy schedule and working on a different companies, we seldom see each other so meeting once a month was really a great idea for us get together and bond like we used to do when we we’re still in College. So for a first food tripping adventure, I decided to take ourselves to Japan, I mean, to Kawaii Cafe and have a little taste of Japan, haha.

About Kawaii Cafe

Aside from Korean tourists, the Queen City of the South has always been one of the top destinations of Japanese tourists. Aside from enjoying our beaches, these tourists come to Cebu to learn English. And one of them is Shunki Matsushima. I never thought he’s the Japanese guy I saw one time in TV, reading about his life here in Cebu and what he did to achieve his dream was really inspirational. You can read more about it here.

So together with Aldan Cristino, they conceptualize and eventually open Kawaii Cafe on August 18, 2016. Their mission is to passionately serve the customers, to give them satisfaction, superior quality product and services while promoting the Japanese culture. With that mission in mind, it was really not a surprise they ended up being featured here in Blushing Geek. *wink

Guests in Kawaii Cafe can dress up in Japanese or anime costumes, and to complete your Japanese experience, they also shows Japanese movies, both anime and live-action.

Authentic Japanese Food

Kawaii Cafe offers smoothies with variety of flavors to choose from and their best sellers are Oreo, Kitkat and Matcha smoothies. And aside from smoothies, they ofcourse have coffees with the price range starts at Php90 to Php145.

When we went there, they are only offering french fries and taiyaki that you can pair with your smoothie or coffee for a complete afternoon snack.

Our Experience

When we went there, the place were packed of people, good thing we were able to secure a place for the three of us. Kawaii Cafe have a second floor which is great for group of friends with more than 6 members, but take note that it’s only on the first floor that you can wear their Yukata and some anime costumes.

For the three of us, we ordered Matcha, Caramel and Blue Vanilla for the drinks and completed the whole meal with french fries and taiyaki. Eventhough what we ordered tastes amazing, I was still kind of disappointed to found out that they are only offering french fries and taiyaki, when I checked out their website, it says there that they are offering some yummy Japanese foods, particularly the Takoyaki which I am so excited to try. (sad face)

And to compensate with my upset stomach (because they didn’t offer Takoyaki), we dressed up as a Japanese women which we really enjoyed A LOT. My! I think we almost took 50 shots only by dressing up with the Yukata. They have a lot of anime costumes to choose from too but I am already content with the Yukata. Yep, sucker haha.

Aside from the tasty foods and a chance to dress up as one of your favorite anime characters, the cafe also offers 3 hours of wifi internet for the three of us for free. I’m not sure if the number of hours to surf the internet is the same with others though.

What I like about the place was the customer service. I haven’t been to many cafes before but I already have my own share of bad experiences and so far, I didn’t had any problems with Kawaii Cafe. I also like that it’s not compulsory that we need to order individually so we were able to order as a group. The only thing that I’m concern about is their slow internet connection, that said, if you are working online, it’s really not suitable to do it at Kawaii Cafe.

As an overall experience, the three of us agreed that we had a great and worthwhile time at Kawaii Cafe.
