A Sunday Chat with Iam Acrylic

By Boberika @boberika

As I wondered around the Sunday Up Market on Bricklane I ran into the very creative Brendan from iam acrylic. Brendan and Ruth have created one off design's for special occasions and my good friend Christa Vi's single's (the red heart and Sam the orange triangle). Anyway, as it happend I also had my camera and a quick chat and here's what Brendan and Ruth had to say...

What do you use as inspiration for your designs? This is always a difficult question - and it always feels like a cop-out to say 'everything' - but that is pretty much the case! We get quite inspired by trips to museums - so much stuff to see! The advertising on the side of lorries on long journeys has provided quite a lot of food for thought. And also, our friends and their tastes feed into quite a lot of our designs - often we'll make a prototype as a gift with a friend in mind - and then put it into production if we like it!

Do you have any creative projects coming up? We want to push ourselves this year to develop a range of clocks (which we fondly remember making from acrylic at school!). It's quite a challenge to change the scale of the way we work - but we've done a few protoypes - and they came out quite well! - so we'll see how we go!

What's on your playlist? Ruth is addicted to radio 6 music - (having a break from absolute 90's) and Brendan has Screamadelica by Primal Scream on repeat most of the day....

If you could be a biscuit what would you be and why? As there's two of us, it would have to be a multi-layered biscuit - maybe a Bahlsen 'Hit' sandwich biscuit - they're tasty!

Thanks for the chat and can't wait to clock your new range (cheesie joke I know)...
