In April last year we had our first visit to The Stable in Birmingham. We enjoyed that visit and vowed to go back when I wasn’t pregnant to try the ciders in more depth. So just over a year later we were back, with little foodie in tow, to complete our promise.
If you haven’t been to one of their branches, The Stable specialises in Pizza, Pies and Cider. This time I was happy to partake in some cider tasting! The Stable do a tasting board of 5 x 1/3 pints of cider, handpicked by the barstaff to showcase their wares which is great to sample a few different ones without ending up on the floor.
No.5 the Devon Bloom was my favorite of this bunch! We took a while to have a flick through the menus before ordering at the bar.
I chose the Blazing Saddle Pizza – slow-roasted pulled beef, Denhay Farm dry-cured bacon, caramelised onions, roasted red peppers, tomato sauce and mozzarella. Topped with sour cream and jalapeños. This pizza really did have everything I look for in a pizza – some juicy, preferably slow cooked meat, sweetness from the onions, spice from the jalepenos and something cooling and saucy with the sour cream.
Lee chose a pie this time round; The Wild Rooster – chicken, gammon and leek with a thyme crust. The pies come served with tomato chutney and a pickled onion – an unusual but nice touch in my opinion as well as some herby potatoes which I loved.
I had remembered from last time the Nutella pizza pudding – chocolate and hazelnut topping, with mascarpone and chopped hazelnuts and could not resist having this again for dessert! What could go wrong with nutella and pizza dough – nothing! Lee chose the Homemade apple and blackberry crumble pie, with clotted cream. Apart from the Nutella pizza, I don’t think desserts are The Stables strongest point, but it was nice none the less.
Child Friendly? Very – the open plan spacious nature of the place is great for prams, and I can imagine the long tables are great for families too. There are an abundance of highchairs so you don’t have to worry about not getting one if it’s busy, and the changing facilities are easily accessible and spacious too.
I think the Stable is a great place for family friendly casual dining, and the fact that it specialises in cider for me is a huuuuge plus!
