(This pledge was found on The Immoral Minority.)The fundamentalists in the United States have ruined this country's pledge of allegiance for many citizens. They did this by inserting religion into it -- making it a pledge that many atheists (who make up a minimum of 30 million Americans, and probably many more than that) simply cannot take. I have never understood why they did that, because a pledge should be something that all citizens can make without reservation -- not something that makes some citizens feel good while excluding other citizens.
The above pledge is one that I can freely take though, and so could anyone on this planet. It is not exclusionary, because all of us should support caring for this planet and all of the life forms on it (whether we believe in a religion or not). After all, it's the only planet we have and we'll be in a whole lot of trouble if we destroy it (or make it incapable of sustaining life -- human or otherwise).
