A Journey to Good Health: Adventure & Do Good

Hey friends!

I have some thoughts of a few things that have helped me get onto the path towards good health.

Live Health

To be healthy means to thrive in all aspects of living; your energies your body, your mind, your soul. When all these aspects of your life are aligned and functioning to it’s maximum potential – that is living. That is health.

Adventure On

I believe in adventure. I believe that adventure is the only way for me to to really know the world, and to know life. It’s about immersing myself and exploring the earth, to live and love with different communities, to thrive in various environments, to melt into different aspects of life that would never have been known to me from my home in the suburbs.

To adventure means to be brave.

When you know the world, you will know what the world needs to be better. And you can’t help but help. You want to help. The need to help and do good roars from your heart.

Do good

I believe in doing good. I believe in creating and bringing goodness to the world. I believe in the golden touch.

Doing good makes life uncomplicated. It lets life flow easy. You find treasure in simplicity, you find richness in a smile, a hug, a tear, a moment.

I love this post by Cotopaxi on simple ideas on doing good.

Prepare delicious, plant-based meals.

Diet is something I am learning a lot about these days, and I am no expert. But lately, I understand the importance of what I put into my body, I am understanding more what my body needs, and when it needs it. I am also learning that eating the right food is just as important as eating at the right time.

Celebrate the ordinary

I have said this time and time again on my blog, because it’s something that has made my every-day living sacred to me. I believe it is important to celebrate the ordinary, because the ordinary moments are the fabric of our life. Everything about life is sacred, and our mistake is when we see some things as “Good” and others as “bad”. There’s no such thing. If you treat preparing your meals with the same reverence you feel when you step into a temple, your life will change. See all your ordinary moments as something sacred, and your life will change.

Live to serve

Service is Joy. I shared a beautiful quote by Kahlil Gibran about service in my last post about graduating medical school.

There are so many ways to serve and if you put your attention on it, another 1000 ways will open for you too. Volunteering is a wonderful way to serve the community. All you have to do is find a cause that sings to your heart, and be there.

Learning a skill that can be used to serve is another way. How can you give? Can you give time, money, resources, skills, laughter, joy, kindness, compassion, a smile?

There are so many ways to give. When you make service the leading force of your life, life gives back to you.

Rise with the sun

Rising with the sun, just 30 minutes before the sunrise, has been something that has changed my life for the better. And that’s coming from someone who was once a self-proclaimed night-owl.

These days I can wake up early or sleep in. The choice is mine. But I honestly notice a heaviness in my energy when I have slept in (what is considered “Well rested”). I understand now there is a difference between restfulness and sleep. Rising with the sun makes me feel in sync with the day. I love falling asleep when it is dark outside. I love feeling sleepy at night, and not “tired/lethargic/drained” by the end of the day. I love closing my eyes and being a few blinks away from sleep. I love waking up and feeling myself fill up with inspiration for the day. It certainly was not always this way, but it is now, and for that, I am glad.

There’s a lot more I could say on this topic but I’ll save it for another day.

Yoga & Pranayama

The highest form of yoga is meditation, and if you approach yoga in this way, it can be life-changing. Join a yoga class, and begin your practice.

Breath is the force of life. It is the one thing that reminds you that you are living, and you want to live. Learning some simple pranayama practices can help bring more vitality to your system, balance energy, stabilize mood, and create peace, mindfulness within you.

Meditation & Kriya

Begin with your own meditation practice to create a simple spaciousness within you, and when you are ready to take it to the next level, find an Isha course to initiate you into the powerful process of Kriya.

Feed your soul

What is your passion? What sings the song of your heart? What draws you in? Where do your interests lie? What are your gifts and talents? Whatever that may be, follow it. Chase it. Practice it. Make it the work of your life. Share it. Let it bring joy to yourself and others!

Get involved

Get involved with all areas of your life! Get involved in your relationships, in your friendships, in your community, in yourself! The only way to know yourself and to know your life intimately is to get involved. See everything as it is. Appreciate it. Adore it. Care for it. Cultivate it. Live it.

Cotopaxi

Cotopaxi is a company that create gorgeous outdoor adventure products such as backpacks, jackets, travel gear.

They believe in adventure and doing good. And they donate a percentage of every sale to various global organizations that support humanitarian, health, education and livelihood initiatives.

My husband and I have been looking at their Hiking Backpacks in  a range of beautiful colours, as we have been needing to get a new backpack for our hikes.

We love this one – An 18L daypack made by an employee in the Philippines who has full creative control over the pack’s color way – which mean that no two are the same.

Take a look at this infographic on the journey to good health, one that I hope we all take.
